Iran Executes Man Convicted of Spying for Israel’s Mossad

Iranian authorities on Wednesday executed a man convicted of working for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, the country’s judiciary has confirmed.

The man, identified as Babak Shahbazi, was hanged after Iran’s Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.

According to Mizan Online, the judiciary’s official news platform, Shahbazi had been convicted of “corruption on earth” and “waging war against God,” charges that carry the death penalty under Iranian law.

Though the exact date of his arrest was not disclosed, officials said Shahbazi had been spying for Mossad since 2022.

He was reportedly engaged in the design and installation of industrial cooling systems for companies linked to Iran’s military, security, and telecommunications sectors.

Authorities alleged that his work gave him access to sensitive information, which he passed on to the Israeli intelligence service.

The execution comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv, with Iran repeatedly accusing Israel of sabotage and espionage activities targeting its nuclear and defense infrastructure.

Israel has not publicly commented on the execution.

Rights groups have consistently criticized Iran for its heavy use of the death penalty, particularly in cases involving political and security-related charges.

Amnesty International has described Iran as one of the world’s leading executioners, accusing the government of using capital punishment to silence dissent and intimidate opponents.

Wednesday’s execution is the latest in a string of high-profile cases in which individuals accused of spying for Israel or collaborating with foreign intelligence services have faced the death penalty in Iran.
