NSC Clears Allowances, Bonuses for Team Nigeria at World Athletics Championships

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced that it has cleared the allowances and bonuses of athletes representing Nigeria at the ongoing 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
The confirmation came through a statement issued on Tuesday by Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Press at the Commission. The NSC’s Director General, Bukola Olopade, also reaffirmed that the Federal Government remains fully committed to the welfare of athletes, describing their sacrifices on the global stage as a source of national pride.
Olopade, who held a meeting in Tokyo with Team Nigeria athletes and officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), emphasized that the payment exercise was in line with the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to prioritize sports development and athlete welfare.
He acknowledged that in the past there had been challenges and misunderstandings over the payment of allowances and bonuses, but assured that such issues were being addressed to avoid distractions during major competitions.
“The Federal Government is determined to ensure that no athlete suffers neglect while representing the country,” the NSC chief noted.
Nigeria’s contingent to the championships includes world-class names such as Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume, who are leading the team in Tokyo.
The championships, which began on September 13, will run until September 21, 2025.
While the Commission has confirmed that payments have been cleared, no official breakdown of amounts due to athletes or the exact timeline for disbursement has been released.
Nonetheless, the announcement is expected to boost the morale of the team as they continue their quest for medals on the global stage.
