War of Words as APGA, APC Spat Over Ekwunife’s Academic Records

With less than two months to the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, the political space has been thrown into heated exchanges between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

At the centre of the verbal clashes is the credibility of the APC’s deputy governorship candidate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, whose academic records have been questioned by Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his camp.

Ekwunife has maintained that her PhD is authentic, urging critics to verify with the awarding institution.

But the governor’s team insists that doubts about her qualifications, especially her PhD and GCE results, remain unresolved.

In a statement on Monday, Christian Aburime, Press Secretary to Soludo, said scrutiny of candidates’ records was a democratic necessity, not a distraction.

He said, “In a functioning democracy, this scrutiny is not a nuisance; it is a necessity. It is within this context that we must address the glaring and unresolved questions surrounding the academic credentials of the Anambra State APC deputy governorship candidate, Uche Ekwunife, and her alarming choice to respond not with facts, but with defamatory smears.”

Aburime accused the APC candidate of diverting attention by attacking the First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, instead of providing evidence of her qualifications.

“Instead of rising to the occasion to clear the air, Ekwunife’s response has been a despicable masterclass in political diversion and desperation,” Aburime said.

“Rather than presenting certificates, transcripts, or a simple explanation, she chose to launch a vicious, baseless attack on the character of the First Lady of Anambra State, Dr Nonye Soludo, falsely accusing her of infidelity.”

According to the statement, the real issue before Ndi Anambra is “Ekwunife’s credibility deficit for the role of Deputy Governor.”

The APC, however, has dismissed the attacks as politically motivated, with its candidate insisting that her qualifications stand the test of verification.

The exchange adds to the intensifying campaign rhetoric in the state, where issues of credibility, competence, and transparency are becoming as central as party manifestos.
