President Tinubu Advocates Deeper Collaboration with Religious Leaders to Promote Harmony and Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s determination to foster interfaith unity, pledging to work closely with religious figures to advance national cohesion, tolerance, and stability.

Speaking at his Abuja residence during a meeting with Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, the President lauded the critical contributions of faith leaders in maintaining social order. He encouraged them to keep advocating for mutual understanding, noting that a country can never have a surplus of peace.

The President highlighted his enduring relationship with the Catholic Church, pointing out his historical support for faith-based education—such as returning mission schools to their original owners during his time as Governor of Lagos. He also highlighted his own family’s religious diversity as a reflection of Nigeria’s overarching spirit of tolerance, mentioning that his wife is an evangelical pastor.

On national security, the President assured the Vatican delegation that the country’s military forces are securing key victories against criminal elements, supported by boosted funding, heightened surveillance, and youth empowerment initiatives to block radicalization.

Archbishop Gallagher, who visited Nigeria to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the country and the Holy See, commended Nigeria’s strategic value and vibrant Catholic community. He praised the government’s peace-building strategies and expressed optimism for even stronger bilateral ties moving forward.
