NiMet Warns of Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in several parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday, September 15–17, 2025, raising concerns over possible flooding and travel disruptions.

According to the agency, weather conditions will remain unstable during this period, with thunderstorms expected across both the northern and southern states.

The forecast, which was also shared by Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, urged Nigerians to take precautionary measures against the adverse effects of the rains.

NiMet explained that the expected downpour could trigger flash floods in low-lying and poorly drained urban areas, a recurring challenge during Nigeria’s rainy season. Motorists were advised to exercise caution on slippery roads, while residents in flood-prone communities were encouraged to relocate temporarily where necessary.

Beyond the immediate risk of flooding, the agency warned that thunderstorms may cause flight delays or cancellations, disrupt outdoor activities, and damage vulnerable infrastructure. Farmers were also urged to monitor weather updates closely, as heavy rainfall could affect planting schedules and crop yields.

Nigeria has witnessed a series of destructive floods in recent years, with thousands displaced and farmlands washed away. Experts say NiMet’s frequent advisories are vital for preparedness, especially as climate change continues to influence rainfall patterns across the country.

Emergency management authorities at federal and state levels have been asked to remain on alert to mitigate the impact of the forecasted weather. Citizens are encouraged to follow regular updates from NiMet as the rainy season enters its peak.
