Fani-Kayode Refutes Reports Linking Him to NFF Chairmanship

Former Aviation Minister and prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has dismissed widespread reports suggesting he is involved in the race for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) chairmanship. The former minister described the claims as baseless fabrications, stressing that he has no interest in football administration and has never been contacted regarding the position. In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Thursday, Fani-Kayode accused some online blogs of spreading fake news by attributing false quotes to him. He said the publications were deliberately misleading and aimed at dragging his name into controversies that do not concern him. “It has been brought to my attention that fake quotes are being attributed to me by various unknown blogs claiming that I have an interest in being Chairman of the NFA. This is all fake news,” Fani-Kayode declared. He added that stories of this nature should be disregarded and that any information not sourced from his official website or verified social media pages should be treated as false. The APC stalwart went further to explain that even if the idea of chairing the NFF was presented to him, he would have rejected it. “I am not a footballer and I could not care less who the NFA Chairman is or will be. If I were offered the position, I would have respectfully declined,” he insisted. Expressing displeasure over the reports, he described them as “deeply insulting” and accused unnamed actors of pushing an agenda against him through falsehoods. He also warned Nigerians to be cautious of “419 and criminal blogs” that thrive on fake stories and fraudulent claims to generate traffic and attention. The clarification comes at a time when discussions about the NFF leadership transition are gaining momentum. Speculation has grown around possible candidates for the chairmanship, but Fani-Kayode’s name has not featured in any official communication from the football federation or recognized sports bodies. By openly distancing himself from the reports, Fani-Kayode sought to put an end to speculation and reaffirm his commitment to political and national matters rather than sports administration. His reaction also highlights the recurring problem of misinformation in Nigeria’s online media space, where public figures are often linked to fabricated statements or roles.
