Tiwa Savage Explains Why She Rejects “Queen of Afrobeats” Title

Nigerian music star, Tiwa Savage has shared why she feels uneasy being referred to as the “Queen of Afrobeats.”
Speaking in a recent conversation with Apple Music’s Ebro, the award-winning singer said that while she acknowledges the respect that comes with the title, she chooses not to embrace it because of the weight of responsibility it carries.
According to her, the description, though flattering, places her on a pedestal that doesn’t sit well with her personality.
“Yes, people often call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but honestly, I don’t like wearing that crown,” Tiwa explained. “It comes with expectations and I’d rather not be boxed into it. I think there are several incredible women in the genre, so it shouldn’t just be about me.”
She added that the tag may have come about because she was among the first Nigerian women to achieve international success in the genre, but she insists it should not define her or overshadow others.
“I really do value the love behind it, and I don’t take it for granted,” she continued. “But at the same time, I don’t feel comfortable claiming it.”
Tiwa Savage’s comments come at a time when Afrobeats continues to gain global attention, with artists like her playing a major role in opening doors for the new generation.
