World Cup Qualifier: “Unauthorised” Press Statement Sparks NFF Outrage

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has disowned a controversial post-match statement that criticised some Super Eagles players after their 1-1 draw with South Africa in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Johannesburg.

The statement, issued under the name of the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, had openly faulted striker Cyriel Dessers and team captain William Troost-Ekong for their performances.

It described Dessers as “sluggish” in front of goal and blamed Ekong for the own goal that gifted Bafana Bafana an early lead.

The comments, which quickly circulated on social media and sports platforms, drew sharp reactions from fans and football stakeholders who described the tone as unprofessional and damaging to team morale.

Reacting on Wednesday, NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, distanced the Federation from the remarks, stressing that they did not reflect the official position of the governing body.

“The Nigeria Football Federation wishes to categorically state that the said comments were unauthorised and do not represent our stance. We hold all our players in high regard and appreciate their commitment to the national team,” Sanusi said in a statement.

He further assured that internal measures were being taken to address the situation, adding that the focus should remain on supporting the team as they continue their qualification campaign.

The Super Eagles are currently third in Group C of the African qualifiers after two games, with a crucial home fixture against Benin Republic coming up on Sunday.
