Police Arrest Self-Proclaimed “Obi of Lagos,” Foil Alleged ₦1.5 Billion Palace Ceremony

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Engr. Chibuike Azubike, along with three accomplices, for allegedly attempting to stage an unlawful installation ceremony in which Azubike had been parading himself as the “Obi of Lagos.”

The other individuals arrested include Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41). All suspects were apprehended at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

According to police intelligence, the group had finalized plans to unveil a prototype of a purported ₦1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin.

Acting on this information, officers sealed off the venue to prevent any breach of the peace and protect the public from being misled.

In a statement, the Lagos State Police Command said, “The installation ceremony was unauthorized and intended to mislead the public.”

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

The incident has sparked discussions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the audacity of individuals attempting to assume traditional titles without proper authorization.

Local traditional rulers have also condemned the act, noting that such claims undermine cultural and legal protocols.
