FG Inaugurates Committee to Plan 65th Independence Day Anniversary

he Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to oversee the planning and execution of activities marking the nation’s 65th Independence Day celebration on October 1.

The inauguration took place on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with representatives from various federal ministries, departments, and agencies in attendance.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, described the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s history and achievements, emphasizing the importance of national unity and patriotism.

“This celebration is both a reflection on our journey and a call to collective action for the future of our nation,” he said.

The month-long series of events will commence with a World Press Conference on September 25, followed by a Juma’at Service and Women’s Activities on September 26, Youth Events and a Historical Arts Exhibition on September 27, a Church Service on September 28, a Public Lecture on September 29, and will culminate with the Presidential Broadcast and Independence Day Parade on October 1.

In addition, the SGF unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project workstation, developed in partnership with CherryAfrica Magazine.

The initiative includes a modern interview studio for a TV series profiling top government officials and their contributions to nation-building under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The compendium will document Nigeria’s historical milestones and development across political, economic, and social sectors, highlighting the government’s achievements from pre-colonial times to the present.

Officials said the formation of the committee and the structured schedule of events underscore the government’s commitment to commemorating Nigeria’s independence while fostering national unity and reflecting on the country’s progress.
