Atletico Madrid Threaten FIFA Action Against Barcelona Over Julian Alvarez Tapping-Up Claims

Atletico Madrid are preparing to lodge a formal complaint with FIFA against Barcelona, accusing the Catalan giants of illegally negotiating with Argentine striker, Julian Alvarez while he remains under contract at the Metropolitano.

The move signals a dramatic escalation in what has become one of the most explosive transfer disputes in European football this summer.

The row intensified after Alvarez publicly revealed his desire to leave Atletico following Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, telling reporters he had already spoken with the club’s hierarchy about his wish to move on.

The 26-year-old, without directly naming his destination, made clear that a transfer was his preference, saying he wanted to fulfil his dream.

Atletico sources have been blunt in their response, insisting there is no sum of money for which they would sell Alvarez to Barcelona and that the player will not be transferred to the Catalan side under any circumstances. The club’s position is equally unambiguous on the financial terms either Barcelona meet the full €500 million release clause, or there is simply no deal to be had.

The accusation at the heart of the threatened complaint centres on the claim that Barcelona entered negotiations with Alvarez or his representatives without first obtaining written permission from Atletico a direct violation of FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players.

Atletico allege that contact was made with the Argentine directly, bypassing the proper club-to-club channels entirely.

Atletico have also drawn pointed comparisons to the Griezmann saga, alleging that Barcelona employed similar tactics when they lured Antoine Griezmann away during his first spell at the club, reportedly making promises to the player’s family in the process. In their view, Barcelona’s conduct with Alvarez is a repetition of a pattern that world football’s governing body should now formally examine.

However, legal analysts have raised questions over whether FIFA is even the correct body to handle such a dispute. Under current regulations, any complaint relating to alleged unauthorised contact between Barcelona and Alvarez would most likely fall under the jurisdiction of Spain’s domestic football federation, the RFEF, rather than FIFA directly just as it did during the original Griezmann case six years ago.

Barcelona, for their part, have pushed back against Atletico’s characterisation of events, with Blaugrana sources asserting that the club did in fact communicate a formal offer, believed to be in the region of €100 million, to their Spanish rivals. Real Madrid have also been linked with Alvarez, with a reported €150 million bid having already been rejected by Atletico. Arsenal and PSG are also said to be monitoring the situation.

Since joining Atletico, Alvarez has scored 49 goals in 106 appearances across all competitions, including 10 in the Champions League last season, making him one of the most sought-after strikers in world football.

Whether Atletico’s legal threat translates into formal proceedings or serves primarily as a public warning shot, the saga shows no signs of resolution any time soon.
