Darkness Reigns as National Grid Collapse Again

Nigeria’s fragile electricity supply suffered yet another setback on Wednesday as the national grid collapsed, plunging large parts of the country into darkness and raising renewed concerns over the sector’s reliability.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a public notice dated September 10, 2025, announcing that supply was lost at exactly 11:23 a.m.
“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m. today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” the notice read.
The company assured that efforts were underway to restore stability, saying: “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
This latest collapse adds to the string of nationwide outages that have long plagued Africa’s largest economy, disrupting businesses, stifling productivity, and leaving households in darkness.
Despite decades of reforms and huge investments, Nigeria’s grid has remained unstable, frequently buckling under pressure.
Analysts say the failures not only highlight structural weaknesses in the transmission network but also raise questions about the country’s preparedness to meet its growing energy demands.
Electricity consumers across the AEDC coverage area, including Abuja, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa states, were hit by the outage, with many voicing frustration on social media.
As the grid restoration process continues, stakeholders say the recurrence of collapses underscores the urgent need for long-term solutions to Nigeria’s power sector crisis.
