FG Declares Friday Public Holiday for Eid-ul-Mawlid

The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
While extending warm felicitations to Muslims in Nigeria and across the world, the government urged the faithful to reflect on and emulate the Prophet’s exemplary virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.
“The Federal Government congratulates all Muslim faithful both at home and in the diaspora on this occasion. We encourage all citizens to take this time to reflect on the values of unity, harmony, and selflessness as demonstrated by Prophet Muhammad,” the statement read in part.
The government further appealed to Nigerians of all religious backgrounds to use the occasion to pray for lasting peace, security, and national stability, stressing that such prayers and collective commitment were vital to consolidating the gains of ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening unity and promoting socio-economic development.
Eid-ul-Mawlid is observed annually by Muslims worldwide to honour the birth of the Holy Prophet, and in Nigeria, the day is marked with prayers, lectures, community gatherings, and acts of charity.
With the declaration of Friday as a public holiday, both federal and state workers, as well as private sector employees, will have the day off to participate in the celebrations.
