Abia State to Launch Contributory Pension Scheme for Civil Servants

The Abia State Government has announced plans to introduce a contributory pension scheme for its civil servants.

The scheme, which is part of the administration’s ongoing reforms in the civil service, aims to improve the welfare of Abia workers.

Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a press briefing in Umuahia. He stated that ten pension fund administrators have been selected and approved for the scheme, and the formal launch is expected to take place before the end of September.

The government has also extended its mass transit program to remote local government areas, including Arochukwu and Umunochi, to ensure equal access to social services and programs for citizens in the hinterlands.

In other developments, the government has constituted an emergency management team to provide potable water for residents of Mboha Oba community in Ukwa-East LGA, where water sources have been contaminated by hydrocarbons. The Ministry of Health will also conduct investigations into the health risks posed to the residents.

Additionally, the government has directed members of the Executive Council to wear traditional attire on the first Monday of every month, while civil servants are encouraged to do the same every Friday, as a way of promoting Igbo identity and culture.

The government has also intensified enforcement of traffic regulations across the state, warning offenders that they will face fines or prosecution. The government has identified those involved in touting, extortion, and other criminal acts and has given them a final warning to desist.
