Police Arrest Driver With N1m Fake Currency in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a driver for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit banknotes amounting to N1 million.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan on Saturday.

According to Osifeso, the suspect was intercepted by operatives of the Federal Highway Patrol Team during a routine stop-and-search along the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway on Friday evening.

“At about 8:45 pm, near the Guru Maharaj Ji area, officers flagged down a green Toyota Sienna with Lagos registration number FKJ 443 YG. The driver’s suspicious behaviour prompted the officers to search the vehicle,” he said.

He added that the search led to the recovery of bundles of N1,000 notes suspected to be counterfeit, totaling about N1 million.

The police spokesman noted that the suspect had been taken into custody while further investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the fake currency and whether it was linked to a wider syndicate.

Osifeso assured members of the public that the Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and economic well-being of citizens by curbing the circulation of fake banknotes.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant, especially during financial transactions, and to promptly report any suspicious currency to the nearest police station.
