NPID Appeals to Tinubu to Shield Ex-NNPCL Boss Mele Kyari from “Unfounded Attacks”

The Nigeria Professionals in Diaspora (NPID) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to safeguard the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, from what it described as “unfounded attacks” and unnecessary restrictions on his personal accounts.

In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Olawale Oguntonade, the group expressed concern that the ongoing treatment of Kyari could discourage highly skilled Nigerians abroad from returning home to support the nation’s development.

NPID argued that if a technocrat with Kyari’s track record of reform can face such hostility, it sends a discouraging signal to professionals willing to serve Nigeria.

The group praised Kyari’s leadership at NNPCL, noting that under his watch the company transformed from a loss-making corporation into a profitable and transparent national energy firm.

It further cited his role in driving strategic projects, such as the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline and the Nigeria–Morocco Gas Pipeline, which are expected to boost Nigeria’s energy security and economic expansion.

“Kyari displayed transparency, innovation, and patriotism throughout his service. Instead of facing unwarranted attacks, he deserves recognition,” Oguntonade said.

“President Tinubu must ensure those who work selflessly for Nigeria’s progress are not punished for their efforts.”

While commending the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its anti-corruption mandate, NPID stressed that its operations must remain fair and transparent, warning that arbitrary actions against reform-minded leaders would only weaken confidence in public service.

The association also announced plans to honour Kyari in the United Kingdom this November, at an event where President Tinubu and the UK Prime Minister are expected to attend as special guests.

The ceremony will, according to NPID, celebrate Kyari’s contributions to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and his role in repositioning the NNPCL.

NPID further cautioned that failing to protect leaders like Kyari could set a dangerous precedent.

“Today it is Mele Kyari; tomorrow it may be another patriot. Nigeria must ensure that reformers are not silenced by baseless attacks,” Oguntonade warned.
