NYSC, Itsekiri Nation Condemn Assault On Female Corps Member In Anambra

The Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed sadness by the unfortunate assault on one of its female Corps Member by some operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South LGA of Anambra State.

In a related vein, the Itsekiri Nation has warned that it would not take the assault on their daughter, Jennifer Edema lying low, stating that the attack on their daughter was an attack on all of them.

This was contained in a statement by the corps Acting Director
Information and Public Relations, Rosaline Embu which condemned as unacceptable, the assault on the female corps member.

“Management strongly condemns the unacceptable and dehumanising manner in which the operatives conducted their operations, irrespective of their initial justification for the purported investigation they set out to carry out at the facility where the Corps Members were accomodated.

“While appreciating the concern of the general public over this horrific incident, as well as the initial measures taken by the Anambra State Government, Management wishes to assure the general public that it believes in, and supports the ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police Force towards unravelling what transpired.

“This we trust will help get justice for the Corps Member in question and any other aggrieved party.

“Furthermore, necessary administrative procedures are underway to assist the Corps Member in question in managing the physiological and psychological trauma resulting from this unfortunate incident.

“Management wishes to use this medium to restate its strong commitment to the welfare and security of Corps Members nationwide. Nigeria is ours; Nigeria we serve,” NYSC stated.

A tweeter user, Lord_of_warri who spoke for Itsekiri nation warned that there must be punishment for the perpetrators of the dehumanisation on their daughter and threatened action against the perpetrators.

“The Itsekiri nation, and indeed every right-thinking Nigerian, received with shock and outrage the horrifying video of her brutal assault in Anambra State. What took place was not merely an “incident” — it was a crime, a vile and dehumanizing act carried out by men who should never have been entrusted with any form of authority.

“On July 23, 2025, armed members of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, the so-called Agunechemba Vigilante Group — under the supervision of the Anambra State Police Command, stormed a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) lodge, beating and humiliating innocent young Nigerians. They singled out our daughter, Jennifer Edema, stripping her naked, leaving her bloodied, degraded, and traumatized for life. These were not acts of discipline or law enforcement. They were acts of savagery, borne of lawlessness, misogyny, and sheer cruelty.

“We call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and all credible human rights organizations, both national and international, to step into this matter without delay. This is not just an assault on one woman; it is an assault on the entire idea of service, on the dignity of women, and on the humanity we all share. If Nigeria cannot guarantee the safety of its daughters serving far from home under a federal mandate, then the very essence of the NYSC is in question.

“For us, the Itsekiri people, this attack cuts deeply. Our women are our pride, the backbone of our nation. We do not joke with them, and we will never keep silent when they are humiliated. This is not the first time our women, or Deltan women generally, have been subjected to harassment, intimidation, and abuse in certain eastern states. Reports of sexual violence and exploitation are not new, and now we have reached a new low: our daughter, left home for national service, was treated like an animal by those unfit to call themselves men.

“We call directly on Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State to ensure that those responsible for this vile act — every single individual involved — is identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law. If the state government and its police command fail in this responsibility, we will have no choice but to pursue legal redress against both the Anambra State Government and the Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State.

“Let it be clearly said: only cowardly weak men, men who were never loved by their mothers, could commit such inhumane acts against a woman. The actions of these vigilantes are a shameful reflection of barbarism, a disgrace to our nation, and a stain on the conscience of all who remain silent. To threaten sexual assault, to strip a woman naked in the name of “justice,” is to confess to being less than human.” The tweeter threatened.

Going further, the statement said, “We therefore demand without compromise: the immediate arrest and prosecution of all members of the vigilante group involved in this assault; a full investigation into the role of the Anambra Police Command in sanctioning or enabling this barbarity; a formal apology from the Anambra State Government and compensation for the victims; and a guarantee of safety for all corps members serving in Anambra State and across Nigeria.

“Until these demands are met, we will not relent. Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. The humiliation of Jennifer Edema is the humiliation of every Nigerian daughter, every mother, and every sister. This wound will not heal with silence, it will only heal with justice, accountability, and punishment for those guilty of this savagery.

“We stand with Jennifer. We stand with every woman who has suffered in silence. And we will not stop until justice prevails.”
