897 Patients Benefit from Subsidised Kidney Dialysis at Bauchi Teaching Hospital

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has reaffirmed its inclusion in the Federal Government’s subsidised kidney dialysis programme, disclosing that no fewer than 897 patients have already benefited from the intervention since its commencement in January 2025.
The clarification followed the recent omission of ATBUTH from the list of federal facilities reportedly offering the service. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the hospital’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol Unit, Usman Koli, described the omission as “an oversight that needed to be corrected.”
According to Koli, ATBUTH has been providing subsidised dialysis services at the approved rate of ₦12,000 per session since January 8, 2025, in line with the Federal Government’s directive.
“We have consistently ensured that all consumables are covered within the said amount, thereby easing the financial burden on patients and their families,” he said.
Koli added that the programme has provided relief not only to residents of Bauchi State but also to patients from across the North-East region and neighbouring states.
The subsidised dialysis initiative was introduced by the Federal Government to address the rising burden of kidney disease in Nigeria and reduce the high cost of renal care, which has historically forced many patients to abandon treatment due to financial constraints.
With nearly 900 patients already served in just seven months, ATBUTH said it remains committed to sustaining the programme and ensuring that more kidney patients have access to affordable and life-saving dialysis sessions.
