Ogun Chief Rejects Suspension, Appeals to Governor Abiodun

A senior traditional titleholder in Ogun State, High Chief Olakunle, the Asiwaju of Orile Imo, has rejected his recent suspension by community leaders, describing the action as illegal, unjust, and detrimental to peace in the area.

He has also appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene in the matter.
In a statement addressing the controversy, Chief Olakunle said the decision to suspend him was taken without due process and in clear violation of existing traditional and legal procedures.

He argued that the suspension was orchestrated by individuals pursuing personal interests rather than the wellbeing of the community.

“The suspension is unlawful and cannot stand. I have consistently served Orile Imo with sincerity and dedication. This action is nothing but a plot to discredit me and cause unnecessary tension. I am therefore calling on Governor Abiodun to look into this injustice and ensure fairness is upheld,” he said.

The embattled chief emphasized that traditional institutions are central to grassroots development and conflict resolution, stressing that any attempt to undermine them threatens community stability.

He warned that if not properly addressed, the crisis could escalate and damage the long-standing peace in Orile Imo.
Chieftaincy disputes have in recent times become a recurring challenge across Ogun State. Several communities have petitioned the government over leadership tussles, installation controversies, and suspensions of chiefs, all of which have drawn appeals for gubernatorial intervention.
So far, Governor Abiodun and officials of the Ogun State government have not publicly responded to Chief Olakunle’s call. However, political analysts believe that the governor may need to step in to prevent the conflict from spiraling and to reinforce respect for due process in the state’s traditional leadership structures.

The unfolding development highlights the growing tension between traditional governance and modern state authority, underscoring the need for clearer frameworks to resolve disputes within Ogun’s chieftaincy institution while safeguarding cultural heritage and communal harmony.
