Free Nnamdi Kanu, His Release Makes ‘Moral Sense,. Advocates Actor Ime Bishop Umoh

Popular Nollywood actor, Ime Bishop Umoh, better known as Okon Lagos, has joined the growing voices calling for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking during a recent episode of The Clarity Zone podcast, the comic star appealed to the Federal Government to set Kanu free, insisting that such a move would serve the greater good of the nation.

According to him, even if Kanu’s release does not align with legal arguments, it remains the morally right thing to do.

“Free Nnamdi Kanu. It doesn’t need to make legal sense, but it makes moral common sense,” Umoh said, stressing that justice should not only be viewed through the lens of the law but also through compassion and fairness.

He argued that Kanu’s agitations for Biafra were largely born out of the emotional frustrations of the Igbo people who feel marginalized within Nigeria. For this reason, Umoh said, government should consider the human side of the matter rather than focus strictly on technicalities.

Kanu has been in detention since June 2021, following his controversial arrest and rendition from Kenya. The prolonged case has attracted widespread criticism, with the United Nations, several human rights groups, and prominent Igbo socio-cultural organizations like Ohanaeze Ndigbo repeatedly urging the Federal Government to release him in the interest of peace and reconciliation in the Southeast.

The recent appeal by Okon Lagos adds a celebrity voice to the growing pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address the issue.

Many observers believe that granting Kanu freedom could ease tensions in the Southeast and create room for dialogue, while others insist that legal processes must be allowed to run their full course.

As the debate continues, Umoh’s message underscores a moral argument gaining ground among citizens: that reconciliation and unity may sometimes demand political courage beyond legal boundaries.
