Nmecha’s Late Penalty Seals Leeds’ Premier League Return

Leeds United marked their return to the Premier League with a dramatic 1-0 win over Everton on Monday, courtesy of a late penalty from debutant Lukas Nmecha.
The Elland Road crowd erupted after Nmecha calmly converted from the spot in the 87th minute, following a controversial handball decision against James Tarkowski. The striker had been on the pitch for only six minutes.
Leeds, managed by Daniel Farke, were eager to avoid the fate of recent promoted sides, all of whom were relegated in their first season.
The club stormed back to the top flight with 100 points in the Championship last term and began confidently, dominating the first half with 12 attempts on goal.
Jordan Pickford kept Everton level by blocking Joel Piroe’s close-range effort.
Everton struggled to threaten until the second half when new signing, Jack Grealish, on loan from Manchester City, was introduced.
Lucas Perri, one of Leeds’ eight summer arrivals, produced a fine save to deny Carlos Alcaraz, before Jake O’Brien headed over from the resulting corner.
Just as the game seemed destined for a draw, referee’s call on Tarkowski’s block gave Leeds the opening they needed. The defender later headed over in Everton’s only real chance to equalise.
Nmecha’s decisive strike ensured a perfect start for Leeds as they aim to establish themselves in the top flight after two seasons away.
