FG Deploys Advanced Engineering Solutions to Tackle Ocean Threat on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Federal Government has moved to avert a major setback on the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project by deploying advanced engineering solutions to address ocean encroachment along the route.

Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, disclosed this on Monday during an inspection tour of some key road and bridge projects in Lagos State.

According to Umahi, the highway faced a serious threat at Kilometre 14.6 where the ocean nearly breached the carriageway, putting a critical section of the ambitious project at risk.

“The ocean almost broke into the carriageway, and we had to act swiftly. We have now deployed geotextiles, rock layering, and other advanced reinforcement technologies to protect and stabilize this section,” Umahi explained.

The Minister assured Nigerians that the intervention was both effective and sustainable, stressing that the Federal Ministry of Works is committed to delivering a durable infrastructure project that will stand the test of time.

He further emphasized that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway remains a landmark project that will not only boost economic activities along Nigeria’s coastline but also enhance regional trade, tourism, and connectivity.

Umahi noted that the ministry’s technical teams are closely monitoring vulnerable sections of the project to ensure that environmental factors, including ocean surges and erosion, are effectively mitigated.

“The highway is a transformational project for this nation, and we are making sure that no natural or technical challenge will derail it,” he added.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, designed to stretch over 700 kilometers across several states, is expected to open new economic corridors, facilitate the movement of goods and people, and create thousands of jobs upon completion.
