Tinubu Commissions MT Iyaloja LPG Vessel in South Korea, Boosts Nigeria’s Clean Energy Drive

President Bola Tinubu on Monday inaugurated a 40,000 cubic metres (CBM) Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel named MT Iyaloja (Lagos) in Ulsan, South Korea, marking another milestone in Nigeria’s quest to expand access to cleaner energy.

The commissioning, disclosed in a statement by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening domestic gas utilisation, reducing reliance on imported fuels, and aligning with global energy transition goals.

The LPG carrier, built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, is one of the largest vessels dedicated to Nigeria’s clean cooking and energy market. NNPC Ltd described the new asset as a strategic step in scaling up supply infrastructure for liquefied petroleum gas, which remains a critical component of the government’s “Decade of Gas” initiative.

According to the statement, the MT Iyaloja (Lagos) will enhance the safe and efficient delivery of LPG across Nigerian and regional markets, thereby lowering barriers to affordable cooking gas access for millions of households.

President Tinubu, who commissioned the vessel during his official engagement in South Korea, reaffirmed his administration’s focus on gas as Nigeria’s transition fuel. He noted that the new vessel represents not only an infrastructural investment but also a symbol of Nigeria’s growing global partnerships in energy.

“This commissioning is a testament to Nigeria’s seriousness about clean energy adoption and energy security. The MT Iyaloja is more than a vessel it is a vehicle of progress for Nigerian households and industries,” the statement quoted Tinubu as saying.

The development comes amid growing demand for LPG in Nigeria, where government policy seeks to cut dependence on kerosene, firewood, and charcoal fuels linked to health hazards and environmental degradation.

With the addition of the MT Iyaloja (Lagos), NNPC Ltd said it is strengthening its logistics capacity to ensure reliable supply, stabilize prices, and boost investor confidence in the country’s gas value chain.
