Dozens Drown as Boat Capsizes in Sokoto, 10 Rescued

Tragedy struck in Sokoto State on Sunday 17th August after a boat carrying more than 50 passengers capsized while heading to the popular Goronyo Market.

At least 10 people have been rescued, while more than 40 others remain missing.

The incident occurred along the River Benue axis in the Gandi district of Rabah Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses said the wooden vessel, which was reportedly overloaded with traders and goods, suddenly overturned mid-journey, throwing passengers into the water.

Emergency responders, including officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), immediately launched rescue operations with the help of local divers. NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, confirmed that 10 survivors had been pulled from the river, while efforts were ongoing to locate the missing passengers.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of casualties, but reports from local officials and residents suggest the death toll could rise if more victims are not found alive.

Boat mishaps are common in riverine communities across Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season when waterways swell and safety regulations are poorly enforced.

Overloading, the use of weak vessels, and lack of life jackets have been repeatedly identified as major causes of such tragedies.

The Sokoto State Government has expressed concern over the recurring incidents and pledged to step up monitoring of river transport. Community leaders have also appealed for stricter safety measures to protect lives along the state’s waterways.

As of Monday 18th August, rescue teams were still combing the river in search of survivors and possible casualties.
