Kano Assembly By-Elections: Police Detain 288 Suspected Thugs, Seize Weapons

The Kano State Police have apprehended 288 individuals suspected of engaging in various electoral offenses.
Re-run and by-elections took place in the Ghari/Tsanyawa and Bagwai/Shanono constituencies of the State this past Saturday.
The arrested individuals were allegedly aiming to disrupt the House of Assembly re-run and by-election proceedings, according to police spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.
Kiyawa, a Superintendent of Police (SP), reported that an array of weapons was confiscated from the suspects, including a pump-action rifle and four locally fabricated firearms.
Other hazardous weapons seized included bows and arrows, catapults with pebbles, machetes, knives, and clubs.
“The suspects are currently detained by the police. Investigations are underway to identify their sponsors and accomplices.
“The Command assures the public that all those found culpable will face prosecution in accordance with the law,” Kiyawa stated in a communiqué to The Nation.
The police chief issued a stern warning, declaring that “any form of electoral manipulation, violence, and malpractice will not be tolerated.”
He revealed that the arrests were made possible through “clearance operations,” led by the Kano State Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
