Jostle for Yakubu’s Replacement as INEC Chairman Heats up as Tenure Expires November

As the tenure of office of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as INEC Chairman is winding down, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commenced shopping for his replacement. His tenure will end in November 2025.

Information available to us shows emerging political interests are quietly working behind the scenes to influence the process of selecting his successor, fuelling anxieties over interference with the autonomy of the commission.

Reportedly, certain influential political figures, including a former Governor of the Southern-Southern region, are secretly seeking to allow a preferred one to inherit the seat.

The aim appears to be to install someone politically compliant rather than one sworn to electoral honesty. This has raised eyebrows regarding future elections’ credibility being undermined.

While President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not been duly briefed on the matter, sources within and outside government are reported to be plotting the appointment.

Their aim is said to be securing a chairman who will play host to some political interests, escalating concerns that the independence of the electoral body will be sacrificed.

Some of those under consideration for the position have had significant electoral experience in the past, but their past has raised questions as to their commitment to free and fair elections.

The majority of witnesses are concerned that loyalty to political elites, rather than ability, will become the primary qualification for the position.

As Nigeria heads towards the 2027 elections, different stakeholders like civil society groups and opposition parties are urging the government to prioritize a credible and transparent process of selection. They give a warning that any attempt to undermine INEC’s independence could have disastrous consequences on the country’s democracy.

  1. With more emphasis on the appointment process, all eyes are now on how the National Assembly and the presidency will proceed with the appointment. The decision will make or mar the electoral fate of Nigeria.
