We’ve Not Appointed New VC as Selection Process Ongoing, Clarifies UNN

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has denied reports claiming the appointment of a new substantive vice-chancellor, stating that no such decision has been made. In an official statement, the institution clarified that the selection process is still underway and warned against the spread of misinformation regarding the university's leadership transition. The clarification follows speculation within academic circles and on social media suggesting that a new vice-chancellor had been selected. However, the university emphasized that due process must be followed and that the required procedures for appointing a substantive vice-chancellor have not yet been completed. Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam, who assumed office in February 2025, currently serves as the acting vice-chancellor for a six-month term. His appointment is not renewable, and he is not eligible to contest for the substantive position. With his tenure set to end in a few weeks, pressure has mounted on the institution to announce a permanent successor. The delay in the appointment has been largely attributed to the absence of an inaugurated Governing Council, which is responsible for approving the appointment of a substantive vice-chancellor. Although members of the council were named earlier this year, they have yet to be formally inaugurated, effectively stalling the selection process. Concerns have been raised within the university community over the extended period of uncertainty, with many stakeholders urging the federal government to expedite the inauguration of the council to prevent a leadership vacuum. University officials have reassured the public that the process remains transparent and is being conducted in line with established regulations. As the expiration of the acting vice-chancellor’s term draws near, attention remains focused on the university’s leadership and the timely resolution of the ongoing selection process. The institution maintains that any announcement regarding a new vice-chancellor will be made only after the proper procedures have been concluded.
