ABU Students Celebrate Tuition and Upkeep Payments from NELFUND

Students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, erupted in spontaneous celebration on Tuesday following the disbursement of tuition fees and long-awaited upkeep allowances by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

In a viral video shared by presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, students were seen dancing, chanting, and jubilating across campus in what many described as a moment of relief and renewed hope.

“ABU students celebrating payment of their fees and receiving their upkeep from NELFUND,” Onanuga captioned the post, which quickly garnered attention online.

The payments are part of the federal government’s student loan initiative aimed at supporting undergraduates with financial aid to ease the burden of higher education. The rollout at ABU signals a major milestone in the implementation of the scheme, which has been eagerly anticipated by students nationwide.

NELFUND, established under the Student Loan Act, was designed to provide interest-free loans to students in public tertiary institutions. Its implementation had faced several delays, but recent efforts by the current administration appear to be gaining traction, with ABU among the first beneficiaries.

With the successful disbursement at ABU, attention now turns to other federal institutions as students await their turn to benefit from the scheme.
