Labour Party Youth Leader Kennedy Ahanotu Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition, Calls for Generational Reset

In a bold and history-making move, the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, Kennedy Ahanotu, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, becoming the first aspirant within the party to openly enter the race.

In an interview with the media on Tuesday, the 41-year-old political figure called for a “fresh start” for Nigeria, anchored in institutional reforms, national patriotism, and competent leadership. He emphasized that the time has come for a generational shift in the country’s political leadership.

“Nigeria needs to press the industrial reset button,” Ahanotu said. “We must overhaul institutions and rebuild a sustainable democracy that truly works for all Nigerians.”

Ahanotu cited examples of Nigeria’s post-independence leaders who assumed major leadership roles in their 20s and 30s, including former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, who took power at just 29. He believes that youth should not be sidelined in political leadership, despite acknowledging that he is no longer in that younger bracket.

“I may be slightly older than past youthful leaders, but I am morally, academically, constitutionally, emotionally, and mentally qualified to lead this country,” he stated.

Addressing the question of whether he would resign from his current role as Youth Leader, Ahanotu said the Labour Party constitution does not mandate such a move, but hinted that he would step aside at the appropriate time.

“There is a higher calling for greater impact,” he said. “If stepping aside becomes necessary, I will do so.”

Ahanotu also reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and said he would respect its internal mechanisms should the leadership, under Julius Abure, endorse another candidate.

“As a loyal party man, I’m bound by the party’s constitution and internal processes,” he said. “If the time comes, wisdom demands we obey structured institutional directives.”

On funding and political backing, Ahanotu remained tight-lipped but acknowledged the financial demands of a presidential campaign. “When the time comes for nomination and expression of interest forms, we’ll see if money can stop us,” he said confidently.

His declaration has sparked conversations within and beyond the Labour Party, positioning him as a voice for reform-minded, younger Nigerians eager to reclaim the nation’s future.
