INEC Extends Voter Registration Exercise in Anambra Amid High Turnout

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a three-day extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State, pushing the deadline from Thursday, July 17, to Sunday, July 20, 2025.
The decision followed an internal review during the commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja, as a response to the overwhelming turnout recorded across the state.
According to the data released by INEC, a total of 96,085 new voters have been registered within the nine days since the exercise began, averaging over 10,600 registrants daily across 326 registration centres.
In addition, 12,595 people applied for voter transfers, while another 7,061 requested updates or replacements for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Demographic breakdowns from the commission show that 58% of the new registrants, amounting to approximately 56,017 are female. Youths between the ages of 18 and 34 make up about 52.48% of the total registrants, numbering roughly 50,429.
INEC has expressed satisfaction with the public’s enthusiasm and civic engagement, stating that the extension aims to give more eligible citizens the chance to participate in the upcoming off-cycle governorship election scheduled for November.
After the extended registration ends, the commission will display the preliminary voters’ register for public scrutiny and allow time for claims and objections before commencing data cleanup using its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to eliminate multiple or ineligible registrations.
In a related development, INEC has confirmed that it received five new letters of intent from political associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applications for party registration in 2025 to 134.
The commission reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections and urged citizens who are yet to register or update their records to take advantage of the extended window before the CVR concludes on July 20.
