Imo Police Ban Use of Unmarked Mini-Buses, Tricycles for Patrols Amid Public Outcry

The Imo State Police Command has officially banned the use of unmarked mini-buses and commercial tricycles, popularly known as Keke, for patrol operations across the state.

This directive was issued on Tuesday night by the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, in response to widespread public complaints alleging harassment, extortion, and intimidation by police tactical teams using such vehicles during patrols.

In a strongly worded statement, CP Danjuma described the conduct of operatives who engage in such practices as “grossly unprofessional” and warned that any officer or team found violating the new directive would face immediate disciplinary action.

He further stressed that commanders of such teams would also be held vicariously liable for any breach.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has issued a firm directive banning all tactical teams from using unmarked vehicles, including mini-buses and tricycles (Keke), for patrols across the state.

This action follows numerous complaints of harassment, intimidation, and extortion by some tactical officers operating in unapproved vehicles while on routine patrols,” the statement read.

The police command emphasized that this move is part of a broader effort to restore public trust and ensure professionalism within the force. It also aligns with the renewed commitment of the Inspector General of Police towards promoting ethical standards, accountability, and responsible policing nationwide.

The Command urged residents to continue cooperating with law enforcement authorities while also reporting any misconduct by officers to the appropriate channels.
