Former Police Affairs Minister Adamu Waziri Resigns From PDP, Joins ADC

Adamu Maina Waziri, erstwhile Minister of Police Affairs and a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has tendered his resignation from the party, citing a desire to act “in the interest of the nation.”

Waziri, who also serves on the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT), made his announcement on Monday at Dogo Tebo ward in Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State.

“For historical clarity, let it be stated that the current leadership and tenor of the party are incongruous with the stature of a major political entity that ought to present an alternative platform for its members, enabling them to exercise their inalienable rights and freedom of choice in any electoral contest,” Waziri proclaimed.

He attributed his resignation to the “exigencies of the moment and in the interest of the nation,” asserting that his departure from the PDP was imperative given the prevailing political climate.

The former minister declared his immediate affiliation with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Waziri’s defection occurs amidst a surge of notable departures from the PDP, as political realignments intensify in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.

The ADC has recently been unveiled as a coalition platform by opposition figures aiming to challenge the supremacy of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Among those joining the coalition are Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice; Victor Umeh, Senator representing Anambra Central; Ireti Kingibe, Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); and Akeem Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in 2023.
