MTN, Huawei Launch Nigeria’s First 800G Optical Network to Boost Internet Capacity
Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, MTN Nigeria in partnership with global tech giant Huawei, has unveiled the country’s first 400G-800G Hybrid Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON).
The ultra-high-speed network is expected to significantly enhance data transmission speeds, internet reliability, and overall capacity to meet the surging demand for data across the country.
This was revealed in a joint statement released by both companies and made available to PUNCH Online, highlighting the strategic importance of the upgrade as a foundation for Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
The project marks a major technological milestone with the successful deployment of Layer 0 plus Layer 1 (Optical + Electrical) ASON on MTN’s Lagos transmission backbone an industry-first in Nigeria.
The hybrid architecture allows for intelligent and automatic switching of optical and electrical signals, reducing latency and ensuring more reliable connectivity across data-intensive services such as streaming, cloud computing, and enterprise networking.
MTN noted that the investment reflects its commitment to deepening broadband penetration and supporting Nigeria’s ambitions to become a leading digital hub in Africa. Huawei also underscored the significance of the rollout, stating that the solution offers increased bandwidth, scalability, and long-term cost efficiency.
“With this cutting-edge 800G optical solution, MTN is better positioned to support the growing data needs of Nigerian homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure,” the companies stated.
The implementation of this advanced optical network is also expected to serve as a backbone for the rollout of next-generation technologies including 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), and AI-driven applications, as Nigeria transitions toward a digitally inclusive future.
