Ibadan North PDP Chairman Resigns

In a major shake-up within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, the Chairman of the party in Ibadan North Local Government Area, Seun Adelore, has resigned both his position and membership of the party.
In a strongly worded resignation letter dated July 7, 2025, and obtained by journalists in Ibadan on Sunday, Adelore cited “deep-seated injustice,” “a lack of reward for loyalty,” and “a growing departure from democratic principles” as reasons for his exit.
Adelore, a known political ally of Governor Seyi Makinde and former Chairman of the Oyo State Waste Management Board, said the PDP in Oyo State is increasingly being run “like a private enterprise by select factions,” with key decisions imposed on the party structure without broad consultation.
His resignation follows the controversial emergence of Governor Makinde’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Folajimi Oyekunle, as the consensus candidate for the upcoming Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election, a process Adelore described as undemocratic and exclusionary.
“Over the past two years, I have witnessed a growing trend of imposition, intimidation, and disregard for democratic processes—practices that conflict with the foundational principles of the PDP,” Adelore wrote.
It was revealed that the consensus arrangement was sealed during a closed-door meeting between Governor Makinde and aspirants vying for the party’s ticket, after which other contenders were reportedly persuaded to step down for Oyekunle.
Adelore sees it as part of a broader trend of “vindictiveness, authoritarian tendencies, and a lack of respect for human dignity.”
“As Niccolò Machiavelli observed, despots often mask cruelty with gestures of charity, while trampling those who helped bring them to power,” Adelore noted in his letter. “This pattern has become evident in the state, where loyalty is often punished rather than appreciated.”
He described his decision as the outcome of “deep personal reflection” and “extensive consultation” with his political base, stressing that it was necessary to preserve his integrity and honour.
Despite his resignation, Adelore expressed gratitude to his supporters and reiterated his commitment to the ideals of democracy and genuine development.
“It has been an honour to serve the party and contribute meaningfully to the progress of the state. I remain firmly committed to the ideals of true democracy and the genuine development of our state—not superficial accomplishments promoted by surrogates,” he added.
