Nigeria, Brazil Partner to Boost Agricultural Production

Nigeria and Brazil have strengthened their partnership to boost agricultural productivity and food security. President Bola Tinubu met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where they discussed ways to deepen collaboration in key sectors.

The two countries aim to remove bureaucratic hurdles hindering agricultural growth, focusing on livestock production to achieve food sovereignty and increase exports.

President Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria is undergoing reforms to reposition the economy for global competitiveness, particularly in agriculture, where it already has a competitive advantage.

The partnership between Nigeria and Brazil covers several areas, including agriculture, technology, energy, trade, mining, and industrial development. In agriculture, the focus is on enhancing food production, promoting sustainable agriculture, and bolstering private-sector investment.

The two countries will also leverage technological advancements to improve agricultural productivity.

This partnership builds on a previous agreement between Nigeria and Brazil to implement the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Project (GIP). The project aims to modernize Nigeria’s agricultural sector through large-scale investments, mechanization, and private-sector involvement.

Brazil’s research institutions will collaborate with Nigeria to improve livestock farming, and the project will facilitate the importation and assembly of agricultural equipment in Nigeria.

The agreement underscores the commitment of both countries to South-South cooperation and their shared responsibility to lead with vision, courage, and fairness in shaping a more balanced global future.
