NRC to Resume Kano Minna Rail Services by End of 2025, Says Managing Director

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has unveiled plans to restore train services along the kano Minna corridor before the close of 2025, signaling a major step in reviving Nigeria’s rail transport system and stimulating economic growth in the northern region.

The Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this during an official inspection visit to the corporation’s Northern District Office in Zaria on Friday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Dr. Opeifa revealed that the corporation will utilise funds allocated under the 2025 capital expenditure to reactivate critical infrastructure and rolling stock necessary for the corridor’s operation.

“The revival of the Kano Minna train route is not only strategic for connecting Northern commercial hubs but also essential in reducing road traffic pressure, improving trade logistics, and creating employment opportunities,” Opeifa said.

He further noted that the NRC was working closely with relevant ministries and technical partners to fast-track repair works and procurement of essential components, ensuring the route’s viability and long-term sustainability.

The Kano Minna corridor has historically served as a key link between agricultural and commercial centres in the North and beyond, but has been inactive for years due to infrastructure decay and funding challenges.

With this new development, stakeholders across the region have expressed optimism that the return of rail services will greatly enhance regional integration and stimulate local economies.

The NRC’s renewed focus on operational efficiency and network expansion aligns with the federal government’s broader transportation infrastructure agenda aimed at transforming Nigeria into a logistics hub for West Africa.
