Atiku Hails Natasha for Challenging Suspension, Commends Justice Nyako

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for her decision to legally challenge her suspension from the Nigerian Senate, describing it as a bold and necessary stand in defence of democratic rights. He also praised Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja for what he termed a courageous ruling that affirmed the senator’s rights and restrained legislative overreach.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Atiku said Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan demonstrated exceptional courage by seeking judicial intervention against what he called an “obnoxious suspension” imposed by the Senate. He said her action was not merely a personal battle but a step in protecting democratic values and the right of elected representatives to speak and act freely within the confines of the law.

“There is no price too great in asserting one’s rights,” Atiku said. “I commend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for defending her dignity and mandate. I also applaud Justice Binta Nyako for the courage to lift her suspension. The judgment reinforces the belief that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common citizen.”

Justice Nyako, in her ruling earlier this week, declared the six-month suspension imposed on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan as excessive and unlawful. The court ordered her immediate reinstatement within seven days and upheld her constitutional right to participate fully in legislative activities. The court, however, imposed a ₦5 million fine on the senator for contempt, noting that she had violated a previous gag order through a satirical Facebook post during the pendency of the case.

The ruling has sparked widespread reaction across the political space, with many civil society groups and political observers describing it as a victory for democracy and women’s participation in politics. The suspension, which was passed by the Senate in April 2024 following a motion by Senator Tony Nwoye, stemmed from a social media post that was deemed offensive by the chamber. The matter was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, which recommended the suspension that was subsequently adopted by the Senate.

Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election, said the Senate must be guided by democratic values and ensure that disciplinary measures do not infringe on constitutionally protected rights.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, had challenged the suspension in court, arguing that it was politically motivated and aimed at silencing her. Following the court’s ruling, she expressed her appreciation to her constituents and supporters and reaffirmed her commitment to legislative service and democratic integrity.

The development has drawn attention to the limits of legislative privilege and the need for transparency and fairness in the disciplinary processes of the National Assembly. Political analysts have also noted that the court’s decision may serve as a precedent in future cases involving lawmakers and internal parliamentary sanctions.

Atiku concluded his remarks by urging Nigerians to remain steadfast in the defence of democratic values and to use all lawful means to resist political intimidation and abuse of power.
