“Choose Wisely, Not Desperately – Chimamanda Adichie Cautions Young Women on Marriage”
Nigerian author and feminist icon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has issued a heartfelt appeal to young women, urging them not to enter marriage out of desperation or social pressure but to make thoughtful and deliberate choices.
Speaking at a recent interactive session with students, the award-winning writer, known for her advocacy on gender equality and women’s empowerment, stressed the profound impact a life partner can have on one’s personal journey. She emphasized that young women must see marriage not as a compulsory milestone but as a personal choice that should be made with clarity and intention.
“It’s really important who you choose. It’s really important. Young women, choose wisely,” Adichie stated passionately during the session, drawing attention to the dangers of settling for relationships that are emotionally unhealthy or driven by cultural expectations.
She warned that decisions made in haste or under pressure could have lifelong emotional, psychological, and even professional consequences.
According to her, many women feel compelled to marry early or accept partners who do not align with their values simply because society measures a woman’s worth by her marital status.
Adichie, whose works such as Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah, and Dear Ijeawele have championed women’s rights globally, encouraged young women to prioritize kindness, emotional support, and shared values over societal approval or material gain.
“Don’t marry because you think time is running out or because everyone around you is doing it,” she added. “Marry because you’ve found someone who truly respects and values you.”
Her remarks have since resonated widely across social media, sparking renewed conversations around female autonomy, the pressures of early marriage, and the importance of emotional compatibility in relationships.
