FG to Honour 250 Exceptional Nigerians for 65th Independence Anniversary

As Nigeria approaches the celebration of its 65th independence anniversary, the Federal Government has announced plans to honour 250 outstanding Nigerians who have made significant contributions to national development across various sectors.

The announcement was made during a flag-off ceremony held in Abuja, where a commemorative compendium profiling the selected individuals was formally unveiled.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in his office, Mallam Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma, described the initiative as both historic and symbolic.

According to him, it serves not only to recognise excellence but also to reinforce the enduring values of resilience, innovation, and unity that have helped shape Nigeria since independence in 1960.

The project, initiated in partnership with OyanaHealth Limited, is themed “Nigeria Celebrates” and seeks to showcase individuals who have excelled in sectors such as health, education, business, technology, entertainment, public service, and sports.

The compendium is expected to serve as a national reference point for achievement and patriotism, aimed especially at inspiring younger generations with stories of Nigerians who have made a difference both at home and abroad.

Jennifer Chinyelu Obiasor, CEO of OyanaHealth Limited and the convener of the initiative, explained that the selection of honourees was carefully carried out to ensure representation across different fields and backgrounds. She added that the project is a tribute to Nigeria’s rich human capital and a way of documenting real-life stories that reflect the country’s journey and potential. According to her, each profile in the compendium reflects hard work, innovation, and the impact of individuals who have gone above and beyond in their respective callings.

The compendium, which will be published in both digital and print formats, is expected to be distributed nationwide and will form a key component of the official celebrations marking Nigeria’s 65 years of independence. Government officials have hinted that some of the honourees may also be recognised during the official Independence Day ceremonies in October.

This initiative comes at a time when national unity and recognition of civic contributions are seen as essential to rebuilding public trust and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic identity. The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating merit and promoting national pride through programs like this that spotlight unsung heroes and role models.

As anticipation builds toward the 65th anniversary, this move is being widely welcomed as a meaningful step toward highlighting positive narratives and giving national recognition to Nigerians who continue to uplift the country through their service and achievements.
