Labour Party Faction Gives Obi 48 Hours to Resign Over ADC Coalition Move

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential flagbearer, demanding that he tender his resignation from the party over his involvement in a new political coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement released on Thursday by Obiora Ifoh, the spokesperson of the LP faction, the group expressed dismay at Obi’s public alignment with what it termed a coalition of “recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians.”

The statement underscored the faction’s rejection of the newly formed coalition and accused Obi of betraying the ideals of the Labour Party.

“Former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi, has received a 48-hour ultimatum to formally resign his membership of the Labour Party, having formally joined the coalition party,” the statement reads.

Obi was physically present on Wednesday at the unveiling of the coalition in Abuja, a development that sparked internal backlash within LP.

He described the move as a calculated step toward building a more robust opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that it was not a decision taken lightly.

However, the Abure-led leadership views Obi’s participation as a breach of party loyalty. Ifoh further alleged that Obi has been engaging in secret meetings with some party stakeholders, purportedly trying to woo them into joining the new alliance.

The coalition, which adopts the ADC as its political platform, aims to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and provide a united front among key opposition figures. Yet, the internal turbulence within the LP highlights the fragility of such coalitions, especially as 2027 political alignments begin to take shape.
