300 Journalists Benefit from NUJ, Nizamiye Hospital Medical Outreach in Abuja

Over 300 journalists received free medical check-ups on Saturday during a health outreach organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, in collaboration with Nizamiye Hospital.

The outreach, held at the NUJ FCT Secretariat in Utako District, Abuja, aimed at improving the health and productivity of media practitioners, many of whom work under strenuous conditions.

Medical tests conducted revealed that high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels were common among participants, underscoring the pressing need for regular health monitoring in the journalism profession.

The initiative attracted praise from high-ranking officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, who commended the NUJ and Nizamiye Hospital for prioritising journalists’ health.

Represented by Surgeon Commodore Momoh Jimoh Salihu, Director of Medical Services at the Defence Headquarters, the CDS highlighted the importance of such initiatives in boosting the well-being and efficiency of journalists.

“It is actually a laudable event, and I want to say kudos to the NUJ FCT and Nizamiye Hospital for organising this medical outreach. This effort will improve the well-being and productivity of journalists in Abuja and help them stay focused on their job,” he stated.

The NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Osaretin Osadebamwen, noted that the outreach was part of the council’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of its members. He stressed the importance of routine health checks in identifying and addressing health issues before they escalate.

“This partnership with Nizamiye Hospital is a testament to our resolve to ensure that journalists, who work tirelessly to inform the public, are also cared for.

The turnout is a clear indication that such initiatives are needed,” he said.

Participants expressed appreciation for the free medical services, calling for similar outreaches to be held regularly.

The medical team from Nizamiye Hospital conducted various screenings including blood pressure, sugar levels, BMI checks, and general consultations.

The outreach is expected to become an annual program as the NUJ FCT Council explores more partnerships to broaden the scope of care and ensure journalists maintain good health while discharging their duties.
