Again, Windstorm Wreaks Havoc on Gombe NYSC Camp

A devastating windstorm has once again struck the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) temporary orientation camp in Amada, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, causing significant damage to facilities and infrastructure.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has left a trail of destruction in its wake, with several areas of the camp severely affected.

The windstorm, which seems to have become a recurring problem for the camp, has destroyed sections of the roofs of hostels where corps members are currently undergoing orientation.

The camp pavilion, a crucial facility for various activities and events, has also been damaged. This is not the first time the camp has suffered such a fate, as PUNCH online had previously reported similar incidents that affected the temporary pavilion and other facilities.

In response to the disaster, the Gombe State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Adamu Ibrahim, paid a visit to the camp on behalf of Governor Muhammadu Yahaya to assess the extent of the damage. Ibrahim was accompanied by the Gombe State NYSC Coordinator, Chinwe Nwachuku, and members of her management team, who led him on a tour of the affected areas.

During his visit, Ibrahim expressed sympathy with the NYSC over the incident and assured that the state government would take swift action to address the situation. He emphasized that the safety and comfort of corps members posted to Gombe State remain a top priority for the government.

The commissioner’s assurance is a welcome relief for the corps members and NYSC officials, who have been affected by the windstorm.

The recurring incidents of windstorms at the NYSC camp in Gombe State have raised concerns about the need for more permanent and sturdy structures to withstand such natural disasters.

The state government’s prompt response to the situation is a positive step towards addressing the challenges faced by the camp and ensuring the well-being of corps members.

As the assessment and repair work commence, the NYSC and the Gombe State government will need to work together to find a lasting solution to the problem of windstorms at the camp.

This may involve investing in more robust infrastructure, implementing measures to mitigate the effects of windstorms, and exploring alternative solutions to ensure the safety and comfort of corps members.
