APC Backing Tinubu for 2027, Yet to Decide on Running Mate,.Says Basiru
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has given its backing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek re-election in 2027, according to the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Basiru said Tinubu enjoys widespread support within the party but clarified that no decision had been made regarding the vice-presidential slot.
“The president has the full backing of the party to seek re-election. Discussions about the running mate will happen after the national convention,” he stated.
The clarification comes amid internal lobbying and speculation over the position of Vice President Kashim Shettima.
A recent APC zonal meeting in Gombe drew attention after Shettima’s name was left out of a list of endorsements, sparking mild protests.
Basiru dismissed the incident as part of normal party dynamics.
Meanwhile, the APC North-Central Forum has thrown its weight behind Tinubu, saying only the president has the authority to choose his running mate.
Although President Tinubu has not officially declared his candidacy, the party’s endorsement and ongoing internal mobilization strongly indicate a second-term bid is underway.
