Kano Police Launch Crackdown on Thugs

The Kano State Police Command has declared an all-out war on thuggery, locally known as Yan-Daba, following a spate of violent clashes that have unsettled several areas in the metropolis.

Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has ordered a renewed offensive targeting criminal elements across the state. He directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and tactical units to identify, locate, and neutralise all known hideouts used by thugs.

The move was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday, June 15, by Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Hussaini, on behalf of the Commissioner. According to the statement, CP Bakori had convened a high-level security summit with his commanders on Saturday, where he reaffirmed the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on all forms of thuggery.

At the meeting, Bakori described the activities of Yan-Daba as intolerable and directed his officers to adopt proactive strategies to prevent gang violence from escalating. He reassured residents of the command’s full commitment to peace and security, stating that people must be able to “sleep with their two eyes closed.”

To enforce this directive, the police have launched intelligence-led raids targeting known criminal enclaves. The operation is being supported by local communities and stakeholders who are assisting with information on suspected hideouts.

The Commissioner also issued a strong warning to police personnel, stressing that any officer found colluding with criminals or neglecting their duties would face disciplinary action.

The crackdown has been welcomed by many residents who say the menace of Yan-Daba has long plagued their communities. There is growing optimism that the renewed police action will restore peace and normalcy in affected areas.

The command has urged members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement by sharing credible information that could lead to the arrest of gang members.
