Contest Nassarawa Governorship, Stakeholders Urge Former IGP Mohammed Adamu

Prominent political leaders, community stakeholders, and youth groups across Nasarawa State have intensified calls for former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to contest the 2027 governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The demand comes amid growing political consultations and grassroots mobilization in the state ahead of the party primaries.

At a recent gathering held in Lafia, stakeholders led by former Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Prof. Mohammed Akaro Mainoma, publicly endorsed the former police chief as a preferred candidate, citing his leadership qualities, security expertise, and experience at national and international levels.

Prof. Mainoma described Adamu as bold, accountable, and resourceful, stating that his track record makes him fit to lead the state in the next political dispensation.

“There’s a need for a visionary leader with both global and local experience. Mohammed Adamu has shown commitment to public service at the highest level. We believe he can transform Nasarawa,” Mainoma said.

Barr. Musa Hussaini, a legal expert and APC chieftain, emphasized the unanimity of the call among stakeholders, stating that there were no dissenting voices at the meeting.

According to him, this rare show of unity is a signal that the people are firmly behind Adamu.

Similarly, Hon. Abubakar Sarki-Dahiru, who represents Lafia Federal Constituency, echoed the support, describing Adamu as peace-loving, humble, and competent. He urged party leaders and members to rally behind the former police boss for the good of the state.

In Keffi, a coalition of youth groups under the umbrella of Keffi Youth Vanguard (KYV) issued a strong appeal, demanding that the former IGP heed the widespread call.

The group threatened legal action should he fail to declare his intention to run, insisting that Adamu owed the state a duty of service. KYV spokesperson Bashir Abubakar listed several community development projects initiated by Adamu, including police clinics, schools, and security interventions across various local government areas.

The mounting pressure appears to be yielding results. In April 2025, Adamu reportedly met with the APC State Working Committee in Lafia where he acknowledged the growing support and declared his willingness to respond to the people’s call.

While stopping short of an official declaration, he indicated that he had commenced consultations and would soon make a formal announcement.

“My decision is not out of personal ambition. It is driven by the voices I have heard from across Nasarawa—youths, elders, professionals, and women. I am consulting widely and will speak at the right time,” he was quoted as saying.

His entry into the race is already generating political realignment. A group known as the Allied Group of Nasarawa Professionals (AGNP) has pledged to deliver over one million votes for Adamu, citing his leadership record and broad appeal across party lines.

Dr. Sani Ahmed, the group’s coordinator, said they had begun mobilizing in all 13 local government areas of the state.

Mohammed Adamu, a native of Lafia, joined the Nigerian Police in 1986 and rose through the ranks to become Inspector General of Police in 2019. He served at the Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France, and held several key administrative positions in Nigeria before his retirement.

With Governor Abdullahi Sule completing his constitutionally permitted second term in 2027, the political space is open, and the APC ticket is expected to be highly competitive.

Analysts believe that Adamu’s background and national prominence could make him a front-runner in the race, should he formally declare his intention.

As consultations continue and political groups ramp up pressure, all eyes remain on the former IGP as Nasarawa inches closer to a crucial electoral decision.
