PDP’s Segun Sowunmi Pays Sallah Homage to President Tinubu
Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar, paid a surprise Sallah visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos on Sunday.
The visit, which took place on the third day of the Eid al-Adha celebrations, has stirred conversations across Nigeria’s political circles.
Sowunmi, who played a major role in the PDP’s 2023 presidential campaign, shared the development on his social media, describing the encounter with President Tinubu as “engaging and nostalgic.”
He wrote, “Sallah Day 3! I spent quality time with the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his residence. It was engaging and nostalgic. May Allah accept our supplications.”
The visit came amid a series of Sallah homages paid to the President by political leaders, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other dignitaries. President Tinubu, who has been in Lagos for the Eid holiday, has hosted several political and religious figures as part of the festive observance.
The meeting between Sowunmi and Tinubu has drawn significant public attention due to the PDP stalwart’s past criticisms of the APC administration. While no official statement has been issued by either camp detailing the nature of the discussions, the visit is being interpreted by analysts as a gesture of political civility and possibly a signal of broader realignment or dialogue.
Sowunmi’s unexpected appearance at the President’s residence comes at a time of growing calls for national unity and cross-party cooperation amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic and security challenges.
It also raises speculation about future political dynamics, particularly as the country inches toward the 2027 general elections.
As reactions continue to trail the development, some observers have praised the move as a demonstration of maturity and statesmanship, while others are calling for clarity on Sowunmi’s political intentions moving forward.
For now, the visit stands as a rare display of inter-party cordiality in Nigeria’s often polarized political environment.
