Adeleke Advocates for Resort to Renewable Energy

In a bid to tackle energy poverty and combat climate change, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has urged the adoption of renewable energy sources to provide electricity across the six states of Nigeria’s South-West region.
The governor made the call on Tuesday while officially opening the South-West Post-Conference Stakeholders’ Roundtable on Renewable Energy in Osogbo.
Represented by his deputy, Mr. Kola Adewusi, Governor Adeleke emphasized that climate change is no longer a distant threat, but a pressing daily reality that requires urgent attention from all stakeholders.
He highlighted energy poverty as a fundamental human rights issue, stressing that many communities in the region remain in darkness despite being richly endowed with sunlight, wind, and innovation.
“The time for waiting has passed; localized action is imperative. We must power the South-West sustainably. In Osun State, we are embracing bold, evidence-based, and people-centered solutions. Today, we unveil our Climate-Smart Investment Portfolio, a strategic roadmap designed to attract responsible capital into renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and the circular economy,” Governor Adeleke stated.
The governor also announced plans to present the Draft Osun State Renewable Energy Policy, aimed at establishing a robust legislative and institutional framework for an inclusive energy transition at the subnational level.
Additionally, he revealed intentions to launch the Draft Osun State Climate Action Plan, developed in consultation with experts, grassroots communities, and development partners.
Furthermore, Governor Adeleke introduced the IMOLE Solar Lantern Project, a practical and symbolic initiative for last-mile energy access.
The project promises to provide every child with a solar lantern, enabling them to study, dream, and grow regardless of their location or background.
The South-West Post-Conference Stakeholders’ Roundtable on Renewable Energy was described by Professor Chinwe Obuaku, Lead Technical Consultant on Climate Change and Renewable Energy to the Osun State Governor, as a forum for honest dialogue, technical exchange, and legislative clarity.
The roundtable marks a critical turning point in the region’s transition to renewable energy, with stakeholders coming together to discuss the next steps in translating shared vision into state-backed action.
According to Professor Obuaku, “We will listen, challenge each other, and leave with a shared understanding of what it takes to enact sub-national renewable energy frameworks that are ambitious, bankable, and just.”
She stressed that the region is ready to transition to renewable energy, with the necessary intellect, infrastructure, and institutional awareness in place.
The push for renewable energy in the South-West region is expected to create jobs, provide clean energy access, and drive inclusive growth. As Governor Adeleke emphasized,
“We must power the South-West sustainably. The time for waiting has passed; localized action is imperative.”
