Nigeria’s Ruling Party Fires Back at Critics of President Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing them of being power-hungry politicians who are driven by self-interest.
According to APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the trio has failed to deliver on their promises during their time in office, despite holding top positions in the country between 1999 and 2023.
Morka argued that they did not attempt to address the structural challenges that hindered the economy and worsened poverty during their tenure.
Morka specifically took aim at Amaechi, who served for 24 years in various capacities, including as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He accused Amaechi of having no record of attempting to combat poverty in his state or the country, and of being driven by a desire to return to power to exploit state resources.
The APC also defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which have been criticized by Atiku, Amaechi, and El-Rufai.
The party argued that the reforms, which include the removal of fuel subsidies and the harmonization of multiple exchange rates, are necessary to stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty.
Morka stated that the previous administration’s failure to allow the Naira to find its real value created economic conditions that led to poverty, and that President Tinubu’s reforms are taking bold steps to catalyze economic growth and alleviate poverty.
He also accused Atiku and Peter Obi of benefiting from the old system and of trying to preserve it.
The APC insisted that President Tinubu’s reforms are yielding positive results, with entrepreneurs, farmers, and service providers thriving, and that the removal of fuel subsidies has ended massive corruption and sparked a surge in investments in the oil and gas sector.
The party also noted that the harmonization of multiple exchange rates has bolstered Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global market.
