Wike Should’ve Paid For PDP’s Ground Rent as Proof of Loyalty, Says Bode George

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the issue of unpaid ground rent on properties reportedly linked to the PDP. George said Wike, as a senior party figure and now a federal minister, ought to have taken responsibility for the payment as a demonstration of loyalty to the party.

Addressing journalists in Lagos, George expressed disappointment in Wike’s failure to intervene in the matter, saying such inaction reflects indifference to the very platform that helped him rise politically.

According to George, “If Wike truly remains committed to the PDP, he should have paid that ground rent without hesitation. It’s not just about legality — it’s about loyalty and principle. The PDP gave him a platform; he should protect its interests, not abandon them.”

The comment comes amid heightened tensions within the PDP, following Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister by President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The move has raised questions among party stakeholders about Wike’s current political allegiance, with many accusing him of betraying the party while benefiting from a rival administration.

George said the issue was emblematic of a larger problem within the PDP — the erosion of internal discipline and commitment to party ideals.

He warned that such actions, if left unchecked, would continue to undermine the unity and credibility of the party ahead of future elections.

As of the time of this report, Wike has not responded to the remarks. Political analysts note that his silence is likely to fuel further speculation over his role in the PDP and the extent of his alignment with the APC-led federal government.

George concluded by calling on the PDP leadership to take stronger positions on loyalty and accountability among its members, especially those holding positions in government.

He maintained that public officeholders who benefit from the party’s support must reflect that loyalty in both their words and actions, particularly when matters affecting the party’s interest are within their control.
