Coalition Only Wants to Exploit Your Popularity, Sowunmi Warns Obi
Political analyst and former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Segun Sowunmi, has warned former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his rumored involvement in ongoing coalition talks with other opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a recent statement, Sowunmi cautioned Obi to be wary of political alliances that may be forming solely to take advantage of his rising popularity and credibility among Nigerians, especially the youth.
“The coalition only wants to take advantage of your popularity. You have built a strong image based on integrity and performance. Be careful not to allow yourself to be used by those who may not share your values or have the interest of Nigerians at heart,” Sowunmi stated.
Sowunmi’s remarks come amid growing speculation of a major opposition coalition forming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election. Talks of a unified front have intensified in recent months, with various political actors reportedly reaching out to Obi due to his strong showing in the 2023 election and his continued influence on national discourse.
Peter Obi, who emerged as a major third-force candidate in 2023, remains a key political figure and a potential kingmaker in any future alignment. His support base, largely made up of younger voters and professionals, continues to push for reforms and better governance.
Sowunmi, however, warned that entering a coalition without a clear and principled foundation could dilute Obi’s message and compromise the ideals he represents.
“You must ensure that any partnership you enter into is based on shared vision, not convenience.
“Many are drawn to your name and face because of what they represent—but their interests may not align with the change Nigerians are seeking,” Sowunmi advised.
As Nigeria approaches another critical electoral season, political observers say the formation of a credible, united opposition will be key in shaping the country’s political future.
However, the challenge remains in building alliances that are both strategic and sincere.
